Works of Art and The Artists
Most of the pieces of art were not originally made in Rome. Titian, Caravaggio, and Michelangelo are some of the more famous artists of the 18th century. Below, there are different paintings from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Ceiling, Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes, and Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne.
Michelangelo

This painting from the Sistine Chapel Ceiling is famous as it is shown that God is giving Adam life. Michelangelo (1475-1564) was mainly known for his sculpting skills but was given the opportunity to paint this masterpiece. It is said that Michelangelo laid down on a lift and painted the ceiling. His most famous sculpture is "David."
Caravaggio

Caravaggio (1592-1610) was known for painting mainly. This piece is called "Judith Beheading Holofernes." The story behind this is that Judith saved her people from the horrible Holofernes. She got him drunk and he passed out. Judith then grabbed his sword and took two swings. She then held his head in her hands and then handed it off to her maid that is in the corner.
Titian

Titian (16th century) was commissoned to paint this picture to tell the story of "Bacchus and Ariadne." This tels the story of Princess Ariadne, who was in love with Theseus. Theseus left her alone on the beach as she slept. When Ariadne woke, she frantically searched for her love but she stumbled upon the wine god, Bacchus. Bacchus was telling Ariadne that he had fallen in love with her and he asked her to marry him. He offered her the sky as a wedding gift and promised her to become a constellation one day. Titian was an amazing painter as he could paint in such a realistic fashion.
